Creating a Basic Quiz
This tutorial will guide you through creating your first size recommendation quiz from start to finish. We’ll build a complete quiz for a women’s t-shirt collection as an example.
Before You Start
Make sure you have:
- ✅ Access to your product size chart
- ✅ A clear understanding of your target customers
- ✅ Products with size variants set up in Shopify
- ✅ About 15-30 minutes to complete the tutorial
Step 1: Access the Quiz Dashboard
- Open SmartSize AI Fit Recommender from your Shopify admin apps section
- Navigate to the main dashboard - You’ll see the “Fit Quizzes” page
- Click the “New Quiz” button in the top-right corner
This will take you to the quiz editor with a blank quiz ready to configure.
Step 2: Configure Basic Quiz Information
The first section you’ll see is the Quiz Information card at the top.
Set the Quiz Title
- Click in the “Title” field
- Enter a descriptive name for your quiz
- Example: “Women’s T-Shirt Size Guide”
- Tip: Use names that clearly identify the product and audience
Set the Quiz Status
- Leave status as “Draft” for now
- You’ll change this to “Active” once everything is configured
- Draft quizzes are not visible to customers
Result: Your quiz now has a name and is in draft mode for testing.
Step 3: Select Target Gender
The next section is Gender Selection.
Choose the Appropriate Gender
- Select “Female” for our women’s t-shirt example
- Options available:
- Male - For men’s products
- Female - For women’s products
- Unisex - For gender-neutral products
Why this matters: Gender selection affects the measurement labels and customer experience.
Step 4: Configure Garment Category
In the Garment Category section, you’ll define what type of clothing this quiz covers.
Select “Top” Category
- Choose “Top” from the options
- Available categories:
- Top - Upper body garments (shirts, jackets, sweaters)
- Bottom - Lower body garments (pants, skirts, shorts)
- Both - Full body or sets (dresses, jumpsuits)
- Custom - Advanced custom configurations
Automatic Measurement Configuration
When you select “Top”, SmartSize AI Fit Recommender automatically:
- ✅ Enables chest measurements (primary for tops)
- ✅ Enables waist measurements (important for fit)
- ❌ Disables hip measurements (not needed for tops)
Result: Your quiz is now configured to collect the right measurements for t-shirts.
Step 5: Create Your Size Table
This is the most important part - defining your size chart with measurements.
Understanding the Size Table
The size table shows:
- Size Name - Your size labels (XS, S, M, L, XL)
- Chest Min/Max - Minimum and maximum chest measurements for each size
- Waist Min/Max - Minimum and maximum waist measurements for each size
Add Your First Size
- Click “Add Size” button
- Enter size name: “XS”
- Enter chest measurements:
- Min: 81 cm
- Max: 86 cm
- Enter waist measurements:
- Min: 61 cm
- Max: 66 cm
Add Remaining Sizes
Continue adding sizes with your size chart data:
Size | Chest Min | Chest Max | Waist Min | Waist Max |
---|---|---|---|---|
XS | 81 | 86 | 61 | 66 |
S | 86 | 91 | 66 | 71 |
M | 91 | 96 | 71 | 76 |
L | 96 | 102 | 76 | 82 |
XL | 102 | 108 | 82 | 88 |
Size Table Tips
- No gaps: Ensure measurements flow smoothly between sizes
- Logical progression: Each size should be larger than the previous
- Realistic ranges: Base measurements on actual product measurements
Confirm Size Order
- Check the “Size order confirmation” checkbox
- This confirms your sizes are arranged from smallest to largest
- Required before saving the quiz
Result: You now have a complete size table that customers’ measurements will be matched against.
Step 6: Choose Measurement Units
In the Measurement Units section:
Select Your Preferred Units
- Choose “Metric” if you entered measurements in centimeters
- Choose “Imperial” if you prefer inches
- For our example, we used centimeters, so select “Metric”
Note: You can change units later, and SmartSize AI Fit Recommender will handle conversions automatically.
Step 7: Link to Products
Now you need to tell SmartSize AI Fit Recommender which products this quiz applies to.
Set Linking Condition
- Choose “Meet at least one condition” (ANY)
- This means products only need to match one of your linking criteria
- Alternative: “Meet all conditions” (ALL) requires products to match every criteria
Set Priority
- Leave priority as “0” for your first quiz
- Higher numbers take precedence if multiple quizzes match the same product
Link by Collection (Recommended for beginners)
- Click “Select collections”
- Choose your women’s t-shirt collection from the Shopify picker
- Confirm your selection
Alternative Linking Methods
You can also link by:
- Specific products - Individual product selection
- Product types - All products of a certain type
- Vendors - All products from specific brands
- Tags - Products with specific tags
Result: Your quiz will now appear on all products in your selected collection.
Step 8: Save Your Quiz
Save as Draft
- Click “Save” in the top save bar
- SmartSize AI Fit Recommender will validate your quiz
- Address any validation errors if they appear
- Your quiz is now saved as a draft
Common Validation Errors
- “Title is required” - Add a quiz title
- “At least one size is required” - Add sizes to your size table
- “Size order must be confirmed” - Check the size order confirmation
- “At least one measurement must be enabled” - Ensure chest, waist, or hip is enabled
Step 9: Test Your Quiz
Test in Draft Mode
- Visit one of your linked products in your store
- Look for the size recommendation section (visible to admins only in draft mode)
- Test with different measurements to verify recommendations work correctly
Example Test Measurements
Try these measurements to test your t-shirt quiz:
- Customer 1: Chest: 88cm, Waist: 68cm → Should recommend Size S
- Customer 2: Chest: 94cm, Waist: 73cm → Should recommend Size M
- Customer 3: Chest: 99cm, Waist: 79cm → Should recommend Size L
Step 10: Activate Your Quiz
Once you’re satisfied with testing:
Go Live
- Return to the quiz editor
- Change status from “Draft” to “Active”
- Click “Save”
- Your quiz is now live for customers to use
Verify Activation
- Visit your store as a customer (incognito/private browser)
